Online Workshop - Practicing Lament

Online Workshop - Practicing Lament

Why Lament Matters

There is always a gap between what we’re hoping for and what’s really happening. Learning to lament is how we stay response-abled in that gap. Without lament, we become reactive to pain instead of responsive. We shrink our lives to avoid sadness—and when sadness does come, it is more overwhelming or gets offloaded onto others as self-pity.

Join Dr. Colton Shannon for a workshop that offers you a sacred, structured space to learn and practice lament—not as a weakness, but as a vital human competency that forms strength, honesty, and intimacy with God.

Who It’s For

  • For those who have experienced life-altering losses or for those who just want to learn from their sadness on a day-to-day basis.

  • For those who want to be more honest with the Self, others, and God.

  • Parents, spouses, caregivers, leaders—those who may feel worn down by carrying sadness alone or avoiding it altogether.

What You’ll Experience

We will meet on zoom for 90 minutes or less.

The Spiritual Root System is a philosophy pioneered by Dr. Chip Dodd to help recapture connection to the contents of the heart: feelings, needs, desire, longings, and hopes. This workshop will integrate the Spiritual Root System philosophy with the practical movement of Psalm 13.

Dr. Shannon will walk you through a simple, three-movement structure from Psalm 13:

  • Complaint – Name what feels painful, unfair, or overwhelming without edits.

  • Request – Ask boldly for what you need—strength, healing, clarity, or comfort.

  • Confidence & Praise – Reconnect with what you still trust about God, and remember His goodness.

This isn’t therapy. This is teaching and practice. You’ll leave with a written lament that reflects your story and helps you grow your “lament-ability”—the capacity to grieve well and be present with others in their sorrow too.
